AI.school part 4: Different phases of AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) has undergone remarkable development in recent years, transitioning from a time of limited functionality to encompassing increasingly advanced systems. Although we have seen significant improvements in recent years, we are still early in the development process. There are three main phases in the development of AI.

The first phase – Artificial Narrow Intelligence

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), or weak intelligence, represents the initial phase of AI. ANI systems are specialized in performing specific tasks within a limited domain. These systems excel at handling specific tasks such as speech recognition, image recognition, or pattern recognition. ANI is the phase we are currently in as of 2023 and can be found in many solutions such as digital assistants, recommendation systems, and self-driving vehicles. These systems have a limited ability to generalize and lack a deeper understanding of context and reasoning.

This form of AI has proven to be a valuable resource with a wide range of applications in many industries. Although this form has limitations in understanding the world around it, it has nevertheless revolutionized the way we perform tasks, improving efficiency and accuracy in various areas.

As we move forward, it will be exciting to see how weak intelligence is used in conjunction with other forms of AI to create even more advanced intelligent systems.

The second phase – Artificial General Intelligence

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), or strong intelligence, represents the next phase of AI. AGI systems are capable of performing any intellectual task that a human brain can handle. These systems have the ability to understand, learn, reason, and generalize knowledge across different domains. The goal of AGI is to mimic the general intelligence of humans and be able to independently handle complex problems. AGI has a wide range of potential applications that require thinking and analysis, including scientific research, medicine, finance, law, creative work, and more. In this phase, researchers expect us to solve global problems such as the climate crisis, desertification, food scarcity, and similar challenges. While we have not yet achieved artificial general intelligence, it is a goal for many researchers and technology companies.

These AIs can adapt to changes and handle new situations without the need for human guidance. This means that machines become more autonomous, and it will be important to ensure that these systems perform in accordance with human will and that the systems carry out their own intentions. How can we ensure that AGI systems do not surpass human understanding and make decisions that may have unintended consequences?

Artificial Superintelligence

Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) represents the hypothetical phase of AI where systems are superior to humans. ASI will have the ability to think, learn, and solve problems in ways that far surpass human understanding. ASI has the potential to automate many jobs and radically change the labor market. It may lead to challenges related to unemployment and restructuring of society as we know it. In the worst-case scenario, machines take over the world.

However, artificial superintelligence is still just a thought experiment, and it is believed to be a long way off before we reach that stage.
